Handmade Jewelry-Making Basics – What is a Spring Ring?

What is a spring ring?
Spring rings, a variety of round trigger clasps, are a third type of basic jewelry closures besides lobster claws and toggles, described separately. Spring rings are circles made of several parts: an outer “sleeve”, an inner “shaft”, a “tab” or “trigger” that connects to the inner “shaft” and a spring hidden inside the outer sleeve. The outer sleeve holds the spring against the inner shaft, holding the shaft normally closed. When one pulls the “trigger”, the shaft pulls back into the outer tube, allowing chain tabs or jump rings to be inserted into or removed from the clasp.
When to use a spring ring?
Traditional use of a spring ring is to match a 4mm to 8mm diameter spring ring with a fine chain tag or jump ring on the opposite side of a fine chain necklace, bracelet or anklet. Spring rings from 8mm to 20mm diameter may be used on larger jewelry pieces, and may double as visual centerpieces.
Spring Ring Materials
As with other jewelry closures, spring rings come in a variety of materials, the most common of which are:
- Gold: 18 karat, 14 karat, 12 karat in yellow gold, white gold, green gold, rose gold
- Gold-Filled: base metal with karat gold mechanically and thermally bonded to visible and wear surfaces
- Silver: sterling silver (.925 silver), including blackened silver
- Brass, usually plated with gold, silver, bright copper, antique copper, antique brass, gunmetal or imitation rhodium
Spring rings are affordable jewelry closures for fine, lightweight jewelry pieces in sterling, gold-filled, karat gold or plated metals. For designers who like the way spring rings work, bolder, fancier spring rings can be used for larger pieces and for visual centerpieces.
